D&RGW Narrow Gauge Work/Box Outfit CarsBy Steve Swanson & Mike Horner 8-1/2” x 12”, soft cover, spiral bound, 154 pages Price: $34.95
This comprehensive study covers 151 different D&RGW work/box outfit cars used from 1919 until 1981, when the last segment of the narrow gauge was sold off. These company-service cars include rolling stock used for repair and construction, wreck trains, company materials, water service, and snow removal. Boxcars rebuilt for use as sleepers, kitchens, diners, and commissary cars had windows and hinged doors in the side and ends. The book provides window and door arrangements for the outfit cars, as well as car dimensions and specifications. The authors travelled far and wide through narrow gauge country to find surviving cars, and the results are dozens of annotated drawings and tables of dimensions. A four-page roster lists all known box/outfit cars. This book is a must for modelers interested in D&RGW work equipment, as well as for D&RGW fans curious about where the narrow gauge work equipment came from, how it was used, and how it was retired.
